1699 - 1721 H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil IV Ri’ayat Shah Zillu’llah fi al-’Alam bin Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun Habib Ghazi, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Johor and Pahang and their dependencies, eldest son of Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun Habib ‘Abdu’l Majid Ghazi bin Tun Mat ‘Ali, Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja, sometime Regent of Johor, by his wife, Y.M. Tun Rembiah, daughter of the Chief Minister of Aceh. Succeeded his father as Sri Paduka Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja, 1697. Proclaimed at Kota Tinggi on the death of Sultan Mahmud Shah II of Johor as Paduka Sri Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil IV Ri’ayat Shah, 3rd September 1699. Fled from Johor Lama following the rebellion against his brother, the Yang di-Pertuan Muda, 1712. Captured by Raja Kechil, putative son of the deceased Sultan Muhammad Shah II, 21st March 1717. He was then re-appointed to the post of Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja, and lived at Kota Tinggi. Retired to Trengganu in 1718, and removed to Pahang 1719. Established his new capital at Kuala Pahang, 11th July 1721. m. (first) Y.M. Raja Embun, a lady from a noble family of Johore. m. (second) Encik Nusamah, To’ Tengah (d. 21st November 1749), daughter of Mamajit, a commoner from Aceh. m. (third) Raja Mas Chayam [Nang Chayang], Raja of Patani (d.s.p. 1710), daughter of Sultan Long Bahar bin Raja Daim, Raja of Kelantan-Utara (Jembal) and Kelantan-Patani, by his wife, Raja Mas Kelantan, Raja PeremChe’ Puan of Patani, daughter of Raja Bakar [Kampung Teluk], Raja of Patani. m. (fourth) Daeng Sirat, a former lady-in-waiting to his third wife. He was k. while conducting his prayers on board his ship, by an emissary sent by Raja Kechil of Siak, off Kuala Pahang, before 21st November 1721 (bur. Royal Cemetery, Kuala Pahang), having had issue, sixteen children, including seven sons and six daughters:


  • 1) Y.M. Tun ‘Abdu’l Hamid ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah, Orang Kaya NaraWangsa. He was k. with his father on board his ship, by an emissary sent by Raja Kechil of Siak, off Kuala Pahang, before 21st November 1721 (bur. Royal Mausoleum, Kuala Pahang), having had issue, a daughter:
    • a) Y.M. Tun Khadija [Tijah] binti Tun Nara Wangsa ‘Abdu’l Hamid. She d. 16th December 1741.

  • 2) Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun Abbas ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah, Dato’ Bendahara SriMaharaja (cre. 4th October 1722). b. ca. 1698, educ. privately. Appointed as Governor of Pahang by his father in 1719. Styled Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja 1721-1722. He went mad and d. at Bulang, 1736, having had issue:
    • a) Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun ‘Abdu’l Jamal bin Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun Abbas, Dato’Temenggong Paduka Raja of Riau (cre. 1757). He became mentally unstable and killed his nephew, Tun ‘Abdu’l Mutalib, in a fit of jealousy at Kuala Pahang in 1802. Arrested on the orders of the Sultan and sent as a prisoner to Riau. m. (first) Y.M. Tuan Encik Lah binti Dato’ Temenggong Tun Mutahir, of Pasir Naring, daughter of his paternal uncle, Y.M. Tun Muhammad Tahir ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil [Mutahir], Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja, by his second wife, Encik Che’ Puan, daughter of Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun Muhammad Kamil [Mukamil] bin Dato’ Bendahara ‘Abdu’l Majid, Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja, of Tanjong Batu. m. (second) ca. 1740, Daeng Maimuna (b. ca. 1723; d. after 1795), daughter of Opu Daeng Parani bin Opu Ten-ri Burang Daeng Rilaga, by his second wife, Y.A.M. Tengku Tengah Fatima binti al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah, daughter of H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil IV Ri’ayat Shah Zillu’llah fi al-’Alam bin Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun Habib Ghazi, Sultan of Johor and Pahang. He was k. with his two sons in an explosion on a boat at Bulang, 1803, having had issue, five sons and two daughters.

  • 3) Y.M. Tun Husain ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah, Dato’ Bendahara Paduka Rajab. before 3rd September 1699 (s/o Raja Embun), educ. privately. Appointed as Governor of Trengganu by his father in 1720. He d. 1748, having had issue, three sons and two daughters:

    • c) Y.M. Tun ‘Abdu’l Jamal bin Dato’ Bendahara Paduka Raja Tun Husain [Tun Abu], MaharajaIndra Bongsu of Trengganu.
    • a) Y.M. Tun Inah [Ngah] binti Dato’ Bendahara di-Trengganu. m. at Kuala Trengganu, shortly after 10th August 1735, Y.M. Tun ‘Abdu’l Majid bin Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Mutahir, Bendahara Paduka Raja (b. 1718; d. 1802), eldest son of her paternal uncle, Y.M. Tun Muhammad Tahir ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah, Dato’ Temenggong Sri Maharaja of Johor – see Malaysia (Pahang). She had issue Y.M. Tun Pedah Yusuf bin Dato' Bendahara Paduka Raja Tun ‘Abdu’l Majid [Tun Da] (s/o Tun Inah). Ancestor of the Wan families of Tembeling.  . He had issue, a son:
      • a) Y.M. Tun ‘Abdu’llah bin Tun Da. He had issue, five sons and a daughter:
        • i) Encik Wan Endut bin Tun 'Abdu'llah [Engku Khatib]. He had issue, six sons:
    • b) Encik Engku Ada binti Bendahara Paduka Raja Tun Husain

  • 4) Y.M. Tun Muhammad Tahir ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil [Mutahir], Dato’ Temenggong SriMaharaja (cre. 4th October 1722) (s/o Raja Embun), educ. privately. m. (first) Dato’ Che’ Puan (d. 15thMarch 1745). m. (second) Encik Che’ Puan (b. before 1716), daughter of his maternal uncle, Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun Muhammad Kamil [Mukamil] bin Dato’ Bendahara ‘Abdu’l Majid, Dato’ Temenggong SriMaharaja, of Tanjong Batu. He d. in Pahang, before 12th December 1757 (bur. Royal Mausoleum, Kuala Pahang), having had issue:
    • a) Y.M. Tun Muhammad bin Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Mutahir [Engku Busu], Dato’Bendahara Tua (s/o Dato Che’ Puan, and half-brother of Tun ‘Abdu’l Majid). Ancestor of the Wan families of Tembeling.
    • b) Y.M. Tun ‘Abdu’l Majid bin Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Mutahir, Dato’ Bendahara PadukaRaja (s/o Encik Che’ Puan) – see Malaysia (Pahang).
    • c) Y.M. Tun ‘Abdu’l Rahman bin Dato’ Temenggong Tun Mutahir (s/o Encik Che’ Puan). He d. at Kuala Linggi, 30th June 1745.
    • d) Y.M. Tun ‘Abdu’l Jamil bin Dato’ Temenggong Tun Mutahir (s/o Encik Che’ Puan). He d. after 1737.
    • e) Y.M. Tun Yusuf bin Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Mutahir (s/o Encik Che’ Puan). 
    • f) Y.M. Tun Abbas bin Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Mutahir. Settled at Semantan.
    • a) Y.M. Tuan Encik Lah binti Dato’ Temenggong Tun Mutahir (d/o Encik Che’ Puan). Settled at Pasir Naring. m. Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun ‘Abdu’l Jamal bin Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja Tun Abbas, Dato’ Temenggong Paduka Raja of Riau (k. with his two sons in an explosion on a boat at Bulang, 1803), son of her paternal uncle, Y.M.   • 6) H.H. Tengku Raja Sulaiman [Abang Engku], Yang di-Pertuan Raja Muda, who succeeded as H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Sulaiman Badr ul-‘Alam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Johor and Pahang and their dependencies (s/o Encik Nusamah) – see below.
  • 7) Y.A.M. Tengku Raja ‘Abdu’l Rahman ibni al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah [Raja Abdu].b. after 1700 (s/o Encik Nusamah), educ. privately. He is mentioned in certain sources as Sultan ‘Abdu’l Karim, perhaps an indication that he may have been installed as Sultan Muda during the reign of his elder brother or later. He had issue:
    • a) Y.M. Tengku ‘Abdu’l Hamid bin Sultan ‘Abdu’l Karim, of Riau.

  • 1) Y.M. Engku Siti binti al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah. b. before 3rd September 1699.
  • 2) Y.M. Engku Tatanag Wangsa binti al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah. b. before 3rdSeptember 1699 (d/o Encik Nusamah).
  • 3) Y.A.M. Tengku Tengah Fatima binti al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah [Tengku Raja Irang].b. after 1701 (d/o Encik Nusamah). m. (first) October 1722, as his second wife, Opu Daeng Parani (k. by a cannon-ball at Kedah, 1723), second son of Opu Ten-ri Burang Daeng Rilaga. m. (second) Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun Hasan bin Dato’ Bendahara Tun ‘Abdu’l Jamal, Dato’ Bendahara Sri Maharaja (d. before 1770), son of her paternal uncle, Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun ‘Abdu’l Jamal bin Dato’ Bendahara ‘Abdu’l Majid,Dato’Bendahara Sri Maharaja, of Pahang. Shed. in Siak, before 1741, having had issue, an only daughter by her first husband – see Indonesia (Riau).
  • 4) Y.A.M. Tengku Bah binti al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah (d/o Daeng Sirat).
  • 5) H.H. Tengku Raja Mandak binti al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah, Tengku Ampuan (cre. 1728). b. after 1702 (d/o Encik Nusamah). m. before 1728, H.H. Paduka Sri Raja Chelak bin Daeng Rilaga, Yang di-Pertuan Muda of Riau (d. in Riau, 19th May 1745), youngest son of Opu Ten-ri Burang Daeng Rilaga. She d. in Riau, 10th February 1748, having had issue, two daughters – see Indonesia (Riau).
  • 6) Y.A.M. Tengku Cik Bongsu Kamariah binti al-Marhum Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Ri’ayat Shah, RajaPerempuan.b. after 1703 (d/o Encik Nusamah). m. 1718, H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan ‘Abdu’l Jalil Rahmat Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Shah, Sultan of Siak (b. at Pagar Ruyung, ca. 1700; d. at Buantan, 1746), putative posthumous son of H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Mahmud Shah II ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ibrahim Shah, Sultan of Johor, by Encik Apung, a lady-in-waiting, and daughter of the Lakshmana of Johor. She d. ca. 1740, having had issue, one son – see Indonesia (Siak).
